| In September 1798, Henry Towles purchased rolling land in Madison County on which to build his home in 1799. Lovingly maintained through the centuries, this home is now part of Madison County history.
The original house is a two story log structure with large stone chimneys in the north and south ends, topped with brick stems. Five columns support the one-story front porch. Entrance to the front hall is through a glass paneled door with eight small stained glass panes on each side.
Stairs in the front hall lead to four bedrooms upstairs. There is a back staircase on the second level that leads down to the dining room.
As you stand in hall, the living room will be to your left. There are two windows on each side of the fireplace. You will also notice that the wood floors are original as are the 5-panel doors, mantles and woodwork. There is a door leading to the dining room.
Off the hall to the right and through an original two-panel door is a parlor and fireplace. There are two full bathrooms on the main floor. A country kitchen and mud room is at the back of the house.
Under the original house is a one-room basement that once had a large stone fireplace and an outside entrance. Now closed, this fireplace was used for cooking in the winter while cooking was done in the summer kitchen during warm weather.
In 1930, the old weatherboarding was removed and the entire house stuccoed.
Heat throughout the home is by forced air and there is central air on the main floor. Windows have been insulated and there are ceiling fans. There is a new metal roof and the exterior of the house has been recently painted.
As you stroll the setting around this home, you will want to stop to admire the views and sense of peace. Trees stand tall and there is a sense of warmth as you look over the property. Adding to this idyllic setting is a deck that wraps around the back and side of the house perfect for enjoying the views.
There is a spacious eight stall barn with center aisle and hot and cold water, complete with tack room/feed room. Three small paddocks adjoin the barn. The pastures and fences are in excellent condition.
All residential amenities are within 20 minutes. Commuting time to Charlottesville is about 35 minutes and Culpeper is approximately 20 minutes north. The farm is about 3.5 miles from 29N.
Offered for sale at $589,000 with 17 acres or $785,000 with 33 acres
